[UK] The Blackham Fellowship 2011

The Blackham Fellowships are administered by the British Humanist Association (BHA), New Humanist and the South Place Ethical Society (SPES). The Fellowships consist of a grant of £10,000 for the purpose of transforming doctoral research in a field covered by the Blackham Fellowships into publishable form as a book.

Applications are invited from those who have had their doctoral thesis in the fields of Philosophy, History or Literature and on a subject related to the study of non-religious ethics, Humanism or rationalism in Britain, examined in the last three years.

Additional benefits of the fellowship are the option of life membership of both the British Humanist Association and the South Place Ethical Society, and a life subscription to New Humanist. Fellows are also encouraged to perform a month’s internship at either the BHA, SPES or New Humanist magazine, for which expenses are provided.

As part of the terms of the fellowship, fellows are required to deliver one public lecture at Conway Hall on an aspect of their research and prepare one article of 2000 words which may be published in New Humanist.

Blackham Fellowships will last six months. At the end of the fellowship, a manuscript of the completed work must be submitted to the Blackham Fellowship committee. If it is not, the Blackham Fellowships committee reserve the right to seek reimbursement of the grant. Payment of the grant will be in the form of £5,000 at the commencement of the first month of the fellowship and £5,000 at the commencement of the fourth month.
