[UK] KESS Scholarship-Mapping the Sector: The cultural, social and economic benefits of the promotion of the performing arts in Wales

Aberystwyth University in association with Creu Cymru, are seeking to recruit a 1-year Mphil student to work on a project entitled: “Mapping the Sector: The cultural, social and economic benefits to be gained from theatre and arts centres working in partnership through creative, management and professional development collaborations.”

The prospective applicant should have a minimum of a 1st or good 2:1 in a relevant degree. The project is part-funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through the European Union’s Convergence programme administered by the Welsh Assembly Government.  KESS MPhil scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners (in this case, Creu Cymru).

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for a KESS award, you must be resident, upon application, in the Convergence Area of Wales and you must be able to take paid employment in the Convergence area on completion of the scholarship.

The Convergence Area means the following counties of Wales:
Isle of Anglesey, Gwynedd,  Conwy, Denbighshire, Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Caerphilly, Torfaen

[Australia] Lillian Passmore Donovan Scholarship 2011

The Scholarship has been implemented to recognise the contributions of Lillian Passmore Donovan as an Indigenous woman committed to the field of social work and social justice. Lillian worked for three decades across a range of agencies, both government and non-government in rural and urban settings. Her final position was with the Victim Support Unit in the Department of Justice. She also worked for the Western Australian Department for Community Development, the Aboriginal Accommodation Service and the Manguri Aboriginal Corporation. 

She worked in South Australia with the Department of Community Welfare as a Senior Aboriginal Community Development Worker and Senior Supervisor. In recognition of the quality of her practice and Scholarship, Lillian won the Peter Jordan Award for Social Justice when graduating from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Social work.The Scholarship is aimed specifically at Indigenous people with an interest in pursuing a career in social work.

Applications are open to all Indigenous Australians who are either currently undertaking Year 12 studies, or mature age applicants wishing to pursue a career in social work, or are currently enrolled in an undergraduate social work degree at Curtin University.

What This Scholarship Provides:

The Scholarship will meet the cost of the student fees each year for a Commonwealth Supported place, plus a $2,000 cash payment per year to assist with costs associated with studying (textbooks, incidental expenses etc) for the normal expected duration of the degree for which the Scholarship is offered.

The University reserves the right to reduce the amount of assistance where applicants are in receipt of other Scholarships.
 

Students will only be awarded one continuing Scholarship. A continuing Scholarship is defined as a Scholarship that has more than one payment.
 

The fee component of the Scholarship will be paid directly to the student fee account in two installments per year to be paid prior to the census date relevant to each enrolled semester.
The cash payment of the Scholarship will be paid to the student’s nominated bank account in two installments of $1,000 (pro rata if part-time) per year. First and second semester payments will occur post census dates (thus approx mid-end April and mid-end Sept).

Bachelor of Social Work (CURWC)

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria to be considered for a Lillian Pass more Donovan Scholarship:

• Be an Indigenous Australian.
• Have selected Curtin University as a first or second preference through TISC to undertake a Bachelor of Social work.
• Be undertaking the first semester of their first Undergraduate Degree at Curtin University in 2011.
• Be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported place.
  

Application Process:

1. An applicant must submit a completed application form with supporting documentation attached by 4:30pm on Monday 15th November, 2010, to the Scholarships Office at the Bentley campus. Application forms areavailable on the Scholarships website. For a list of all documentation required for an application please see Section 6 of the application form. Documents must be certified copies not originals. No other copies (including faxes) will be accepted. 2. Applications will be assessed by a selection panel using the following criteria:
   
   • Academic potential.
   • Demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in social work.
   • Reference from an independent person supporting your application and your interest in Indigenous health.
   • Responses to questions in application.
   • Receive an offer of a place into an eligible Undergraduate Degree at Curtin University in 2011. The Scholarship(s) will be awarded if there is a candidate(s) of sufficient merit.
3. All applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application in mid-January 2011.
4. In order to accept the Scholarship a recipient will be requested to return a signed Terms and Conditions document and provide bank details.
5. If a recipient wants to defer their Scholarship they will need to complete the necessary paperwork that will be included with their offer of a Scholarship.
6. Once the Scholarship has been accepted, the Scholarship will commence from the first semester of study.
7. A Lillian Passmore Donovan Scholarship is not transferable to another university or degree.

[Switzerland] PhD Studentship in Symbiotic Cooperation between Humans & Robotic Swarms at IDSIA

Job Description: 

The objective of the research is the development of novel methods for self-organized control and coordination of heterogeneous teams of humans and robot swarms interacting in symbiotic peer-to-peer modality. The applicant will devise novel ways to include humans’ unique sensory-motor and cognitive skills in the loop of robotic swarms. The applicant will investigate different means and combinations of multi-modal communications based on visual cues, human gestures, vocal commands, stigmergic signalling, and radio messages. Particular attention will be also devoted to the modelling of human and swarm emotions and to the study of how to use them to effectively affect motivations, goals, action selection, and learning.

The investigated topics will be a follow-up of IDSIA’s previous research in the domain of swarm robotics.
The research will be carried out in the context of a Swiss research framework.

Candidate Profile:

We are looking for an excellent and highly motivated candidate with a strong interest and a scientific background in: robotics, cognitive sciences, machine learning, and swarm intelligence. The candidate must have a MASTER degree (or equivalent). She/he is expected to have good programming and mathematical skills, and to have a positive attitude toward interdisciplinary research and teamwork.

Time frame, Enrollment, and Salary information:

Expected duration of the studentship:  4 years, starting from December 2010.

The candidate will be affiliated to the Faculty of Informatics at USI and will be supervised by Prof. Luca Gambardella (IDSIA).

English is the official language both at the Faculty of Informatics of USI and at IDSIA.

The gross salary is roughly 40,000 CHF (29,000 EURO) per year (corresponding to a net salary of about 2,700 CHF/month). There is travel funding in case of papers accepted at conferences and for project meetings.

Research Environment:

IDSIA is a research institute affiliated to the University of Lugano and the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland.

IDSIA is a truly international, stimulating, and dynamic environment. It currently hosts about 50 people, including senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and Ph.D. students. The research activities carried out at IDSIA address a number of different domains, including: swarm robotics, machine learning, combinatorial optimization, networking, bio-inspired computing, data mining, information theory, complex systems, and simulation.
